eNewsletter - March 2016

Happy Spring!! Today is an absolutely gorgeous day, and spring is here! Pacific Tree Frogs are singing, stinging nettle and skunk cabbage are sprouting, pacific wrens and varied thrush's are signing their songs, snowshoe hare and short tailed weasels are changing colors, cottonwood and larch trees are budding out, as all of life is being renewed. The spirit of inspiration is in the air, and it is good to be alive!

March has been an amazing month here at Twin Eagles. Kids at our Youth Programs have been dancing in the rain and more excited than ever to discover the treasures that spring brings. Jeannine and Tim having been working hard preparing for this year's Girl's & Boy's Rites of Passage, doing formative work with families. Our Adult Programs have focused on the Art of Mentoring this month, as participants and apprentices alike really take the time to dive into the question of "How does authentic, community based learning happen in the context of nature & culture?". As well, our office is bustling as registrations are pouring in for summer camps. We're grateful to do this work, and serve our community as we help reconnect people with the natural world.

Here is what we have in store for you in this months eNewsletter:

Feature Article: Mullein Tea

Mullein Tea

Mullein Tea is an old friend. At times during the winter and early spring, I find myself with a bunch of softly felted sage green leaves that I'm rubbing in my hands. Then down they go, into a cup of boiling hot water where they'll steep for a while. In 20 - 30 minutes (sometimes longer) I'll pull them out and be ready to drink a steaming hot cup of this delicious, nutritious, and medicinal tea.

This is one of my favorite herbal teas. Mullein has been my lifesaver for curing some of the toughest coughs that hold on like a dog to a bone. If I were to give my praise for one plant and one plant alone for helping alleviate respiratory ailments it would be that wild and wooly mullein. It's also a great tonic for the vascular system. Let's look at the benefits so you know the value you're getting when you make this amazing tea.

Summer Camps 2016!!

Outdoor Adventure Camp

Twin Eagles Summer Camps 2016 include a great camp lineup of thirteen weeks of camp, including some outrageously fun new camps alongside our favorite, timeless classics. Registration for our summer camps has been happening at a record pace, so we strongly encourage you to register now, while there is still space. We anticipate that our camps will fill to capacity this year, and that we'll have many families on waiting lists.

Our nature based summer camps let kids be kids again, giving them the chance to be wild and free. In today's world, kids suffer from lives that have become over-structured, over-sterilized, and over-intellectualized. Children are engulfed in an increasingly disconnected, technological world that leads to the degeneration of health on all levels – physical, mental, emotion, and spiritual. Can you remember what it used to feel like to be a kid during the summer? I do. It was my ticket to freedom. Timeless moments of connecting with the wild places. Friendships deepening until we felt more like siblings. Running through our imagination and nature at the same time. Quiet moments alone just sitting by a creek, letting all the worries of life just drift away. Current research has now proven that these types of experiences lead to increased physical, mental & social health, a sense of peace, care for the Earth, increased concentration, greater creativity and resiliency. As a father and camp director, this is what I stand for, for my own children and for our community's children. Our summer camps maximize all of this, and indeed are good medicine for the challenges today's kids face in our post-modern world, bringing them back to their truest nature.

"I am so grateful and so touched by how all the amazing people at Twin Eagles lovingly walked our son through what has turned out to be, perhaps, the most significant and positive learning experience he has ever gone through away from home. I can't say enough about how lucky we were to find them and have him take part in the last week of their summer program, except to say to them and the universe: Thank you, thank you, thank you."

                  - Alison Barrows-Young

This coming summer we are offering thirteen full weeks of summer camp in Sandpoint, Spokane, and Priest River. They include:
This summer we are continuing our inspirational theme based day camps here at Twin Eagles! 2016 Day Camp themes include:

  • Wilderness Survival Day Camp - There is an ancient calling deep in the heart to experience the freedom and adventure of living wild and free, close to nature - to provide for one's own needs directly from the Earth...
  • Nature Ninjas Day Camp - Nature ninjas are the eyes and ears of the tribe, protectors of the village. They are masters of stealth, camouflage, and invisibility, traveling unseen and unheard amongst the shadows...
  • Jedi Training Day Camp - New for 2016!! - Do you feel a calling to learn the ways of the force? Do you yearn to craft and wield a light saber? Then travel with us to a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. A place where good battles evil, where light clashes against dark. At Twin Eagles Jedi Training Camp, campers will start the week as Padawans embarking on exciting and daring trainings, adventures, trials, and missions as they work to become a Jedi Knight.
These theme based camps are only for our day camps for kids ages 6 - 13, and are very popular. That said, we especially encourage you to register for these soon!

Mother-Daughter Wilderness Program

For mothers and their 7 - 12 year old daughters
Friday April 22 - Sunday April 24, 2016
Cedar Springs, Sandpoint, Idaho

Mother Daughter Wilderness Program Motherhood - a monumental journey. A journey of seeing our daughters grow and change, and a journey of being a refuge and sanctuary for their greatest unfolding.

Through the mother daughter bond our daughters learn about trust and connection. It's that trust and connection that will take you over the hurdles of life with her. What greater place to foster and strengthen that connection than in the safety, timelessness and healing balm of nature?

What a greater time than now.

Imagine having a weekend where you and your daughter can come to the retreat of nature to nurture your relationship with one another. Imagine being nestled in a community and the common bond of other mothers and their daughters in the sanctuary of nature. Accompanying you on this adventure are female guides who can hold you and your relationship with your daughters as sacred and support the growth of your relationship when and where it counts. It's a time to really be present to your journey as a mother and to that very special gift in front of you - your daughter.

For hundreds of thousands of years mothers and their daughters have gathered together to experience the simple gifts of daily life: foraging and gathering, savoring the taste of delicious wild foods, singing together, dancing together, giving thanks together, building and creating together, laughing together and even crying together. In our Mother Daughter Wilderness Program we'll return to that beautiful way of living as a way of nourishing something special in ourselves and in our relationship with our daughters. We'll build natural shelters to sleep in, cook wild foods, bring forth the elements of fire and water, and in the process, magically deepen our bonds with our daughters, too.

Interested, or know someone who might be? Learn more here.

Blessings to you and your family! We hope to see you here at Twin Eagles this spring, taking in the gifts of the season!
